Importing electronics
Verified 1 official source
Short answer
Many consumer electronics carry a zero general rate, which makes people assume they are duty-free. That is only the base layer — additional-duty programs are assessed separately against the same classification.
What determines the rate
- Primary function of the device
- Whether it is a complete apparatus, a part, or an accessory
- Whether it contains covered semiconductor articles
- Connectivity and whether it is a transmission or reception apparatus
Subheadings commonly involved
Illustrative only — these show how the schedule divides this category. ImportCost does not publish a rate here because the legal rate attaches to a specific 8-digit subheading and must be read from the current official schedule.
- 8517.13Smartphones
- 8518.22Multiple loudspeakers mounted in the same enclosure
- 8471.30Portable automatic data processing machines
Country considerations
- China: many electronics subheadings fall within Section 301 scope even where the general rate is zero.
- The Section 232 semiconductor action can reach downstream articles containing covered chips. Scope must be verified against the official article list.
